The years of formation during Bernhard Sill’s studies of Civil Engineering and Architecture at the University Stuttgart, Germany were influenced by creative structural design and analysis and a shift of paradigm from form-setting to form-finding.
After graduation, years of practice as structural engineer in progressive offices followed: RFR in Paris, founded by Peter Rice, and Conzett Broinzini Gartmann in Chur, Switzerland. He collaborated in interdisciplinary design teams with contemporary architects on light weight roof structures, long span bridge, glass facade and multi-storey building in exposed concrete. Several of these projects received national and international awards and prizes.
Following his professional experience in structural design and analysis, Bernhard Sill was appointed to teach architecture structures and comprehensive studio: from 2003 to 2008 as a Lecturer at the Technical University Berlin and since 2008 Assistant Professor with tenure track at the Clemson University School of Architecture. In addition to his teaching, he is researching on structural morphology, adaptive and kinetic structures.
1. Architecture Structures as a Design Discipline:
I am emphatic on promoting Architecture Structures as a Design Discipline with the goal to reconcile engineering and architecture in a symbiotic relationship toward the creation of meaningful and sustainable architecture.
2. Structural Morphology:
The synergy between art and science engages relationships between geometry and structure, architectural form and load bearing behavior.
3. Adaptive and Kinetic Architecture:
Convertible structures can be defined as buildings and/or building components, with variable geometry, structural solutions considering both the ways and means for kinetic operation.
