It is essential for accurate diagnosis, staging of cancer, and ongoing surveillance for individuals at high risk. By detecting abnormalities early and facilitating preventive measures, colonoscopy plays a crucial role in colorectal cancer management.

Colonoscopy

A colonoscopy is a medical procedure used to examine the inner lining of the colon (large intestine) and rectum. During the procedure, a flexible tube with a light and camera, known as a colonoscope, is inserted through the rectum and advanced through the colon. This allows the physician to visualize the colon's lining on a monitor, identifying any abnormalities or signs of disease [1-3].

Early detection of abnormalities

Colonoscopy is the gold standard for detecting colorectal cancer at an early stage. It allows for direct visualization of the colon and rectum, making it possible to spot precancerous lesions, such as polyps, and early-stage tumors. Early detection of colorectal cancer can significantly improve the chances of successful treatment and reduce mortality rates.
