Abstract
Nasopharyngeal bursitis and double middle turbinate anatomical variations of the lateral nasal wall are relatively rare conditions characterized by a group of symptoms that interest multidisciplinary specialists. However, their characteristic clinical picture is not fully characterized. Herein, an auditof the cases who presented to the same surgeon in the rhinology clinic in a two year duration periodis presented. The important embryological facts and different clinical types with their characteristic clinical pictures will be discussed. Results showed that in 2 years period, 6 patients were diagnosed to have nasopharyngeal bursa disease, 4 males and 2 females (Mean age 54). Two distinct pathological types were observed; 3 patients with classical Tornwaldt茂驴陆s cyst and 3 with crust type bursitis. Endoscopic combined endonasal and transoral approach is a minimally invasively procedure and was an effective way of treating both types of nasopharyngeal bursitis disease. On the other hand, 28 patients, 19 males and 9 females with a mean age of 41.5 years, representing different ethnic origins, were diagnosed with double middle turbinate based on endoscopic examination. Clinically they presented with refractory headache and blocked nose.Patients who underwent endoscopic surgical approach (n=13) for reduction of the extra turbinate, reported significant symptom scores improvement (p<0.0001). These results indicate that double middle turbinate may be encountered in rhinology practice (2%). Endoscopic surgical approach seems to be an effective way of improving the symptoms.
