Biography

Dr. Shobhit Sharma received his PhD degree in 2016 and currently working as a Senior Lecturer in the Department of Biology at Texas State University. He has a long and distinguished career in substance abuse and the study of biomarkers associated with stress and neuroplasticity in humans and experimental animals. He has worked on multiple projects that measure stress biomarkers in relation to alcohol consumption, salivary markers of stress (cortisol, alpha-amylase) and immune function (IgA) in college drinkers. He has worked on an INIA/NIAAA-funded project which examined the effect of acute stress on controlled and automatic processing of alcohol-related stimuli in social drinkers. He successfully completed responsibilities as the founder of the saliva analysis laboratory in Psychology at Texas State University in 2008-2009. He is also the recipient of John P. McGovern Fellowship from the Texas Research Society on Alcoholism in 2013 and has presented his research findings at the annual meeting of the Research Society on Alcoholism. Dr. Sharma is serving as an editorial member of several reputed journals and has authored many research articles and a book chapter.

Research Interest

His area of research includes the study of biomarkers associated with stress and neuroplasticity in humans, psychological and physiological predictors of stress in participants undergoing in patient treatment for alcohol use disorder. He has extensively studied Brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF), an important neuromodulator which is vulnerable to the negative effects of stress and may be linked to genetic vulnerability to alcohol use disorder. He also works on social media addiction.
