Abstract

The current investigation aimed to evaluate cadmium concentration in some fruit vegetables (Tomatoes, Eggplant, Snake cucumber and Okra), leafy vegetable (Jew's mallow, Purslane and Watercress) and Tubers (Potatoes) samples sold from Elsoog Elshaabi Omdurman, shops in the main street as well as markets of the Nile street, Khartoum State. Cadmium concentrations of samples were quantified using Atomic Absorption Spectrometer (AAS) Perkin Elmer. The highest Cd concentrations were recoded for tomato (4.9 mg kg), snake cucumber (1.6 mg kg) and eggplant (1.1 mg kg) samples from ElsoogElshaabi Omdurman area . While the lowest concentration of Cd was found in Snake cucumber (0.30 mg kg) and okra (0.35 mg kg) from markets of Nile street as well as eggplant (0.33 mg kg) from the markets of the main street, Khartoum. Cadmium concentrations of leafy vegetable samples varied from 1.07 to 2.30 mg kg. The highest levels of Cd were found in watercress (2.45 mg kg), purslane (2.3 mg kg) and jew’s mallow(1.78 mg kg) samples obtained from ElsoogElshaabi Omdurman area. Potato tuber samples from markets of the main street, Khartoum was characterized by the highest concentration of Cd (0.82 mg kg), being about 1.49 and 1.64 times as great as that in potato samples from the shops of ElsoogElshaabi Omdurman and Nile street markets, respectively .Cadmium concentration of vegetable samples from different areas of Khartoum can be arranged as follow: Omdurman area> Nile street area>The main street in Khartoum state.
