Acetone in exhaled breath is a potential biomarker of diabetes mellitus (DM). Elevated breath acetone concentrations
have been observed in DM patients. One of the challenging issues in using this acetone biomarker for potential diabetes
screening is to find a quantitative relationship between breath acetone concentration and blood glucose level or A1C level. In
order to address this issue, we need a novel system for real-time, online breath analysis with high sensitivity, high selectivity,
high accuracy, and high data throughput. In this work, we report on a new portable cavity ringdown breath acetone analyzer.
Its detection capabilities, such as limit of detection, baseline stability, detection sensitivity, reproducibility, response time, etc.
were investigated. The acetone breath analyzer was validated using gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS), which
is typically referred to as a golden standard method for trace gas analysis. Comparison of the testing results showed that this
ringdown breath acetone analyzer was ready for reliable real-time, online breath acetone analysis in a clinic. Subsequently, the
validated breath analyzer was employed for breath acetone measurements in more than 100 human subjects including healthy
and diabetic people. New results in breath acetone and its relation with blood glucose level will be discussed.
