Abstract
Background: Visceral adipose tissue accumulation highly correlates with metabolic abnormalities and cadiovascular diseases. Therefore, various therapeutic options have been studied to improve abdominal obesity. Particularly, radiofrequency therapy are using increasingly because of its effect on body volume reduction, cellulite treatment, subcutaneous fat reduction through the production heat, as well as benefit as a non-invasive option. Nevertheless using widely, evidencies about the effect of radiofrequency therapy on abdominal obesity by direct measurement of fat distribution are lack and that is the purpose of present study to prove effect. Method: Ten women aged between 20and 39 years old with waist circumference above 80cm were participated in department of family medicine of one university hospital from July to August, 2011. Participants were performed six sessions of radiofrequency therapy by 1MHz monopolar mode of radiofrequency device. Abdominal fat by ultrasonography, weight, BMI, waist circumference, waist hip ratio, body fat mass, and percent body fat were measured before and after radiofrequency therapy. Result: After six sessions of radiofrequency therapy, waist circumference, waist hip ratio, body fat mass, and percent body fat were significantly decreased. Weight and BMI were decreased, but not significantly. Visceral fat thickness and subcutaneous fat thickness were significantly decreased(P<0.01), mean difference between before and after radiofrequency therapy were 0.34 ± 0.23 cm in visceral fat thickness, and 1.01 ± 0.42 cm in subcutaneous fat thickness. Conclusion: Six sessions of radiofrequency therapy was very effective on reduction abdominal fat. Therefore appropriate use of the radiofrequency therapy may help in improving abdominal obesity as a therapeutic option.
